[Worldwide Koi Club] Pond Pump died. Suggestions for new one?
our home depot now only sells China pumps. This spring I bougt one 500gph pump for a fountain and it lasted about 2 months, I do have mag drive pumps by Danner which I have used for over 10 years and never had a failure of one of these pumps. They may cast a few dollars more but on the long run if they last 3 times longer the extra money you pay turns out to be a big savings. I have heard of people using some of there sumps pumps also as pond pumps. However you must be carefull here as there can be issues with some of them. 1. the input suction will grab a fish and either suck it in or hold it near the input and eventualy kill it. Others may not be designed for contioous duty. which could result in a short life span. I did use one of these years ago that was rated at about 5,400 gph. In the process of a two months I lost two fish that were sucked into the pump (3″ to 5″ fish) then the pump died because the bearing frooze up. I looked into repair and found it was just not worth it and I repaced it with a MagDrive 3,600 gph pump that actualy gave me more flow than the old 5,400 pump did. Probably a matter though that the 5,400 gph pump recommended a 3″ or larger hose size. and I was running 2″. Dennis
