[Worldwide Koi Club] Koi not eating and hiding

Dennis, Sorry to hear of the koi loss. Were your koi looking and acting normal before the lawn service did their applications? What kind of chemical applications have they been applying?? Some lawn services include a bug killer in their applications and that could very well be the cause of your dying koi problems. If you’re able to get a hold of a sample of the chemicals the lawn service applied to your lawn, you might want to have the samples tested for chemicals that might be fatal to fish. At the very least, the company should have a list of the various compounds and chemicals that make up the product they’re applying to your lawn. Check with them.
Your water hyacinth and most other plants you might have in your pond are most likely turning yellow because of the salt in the water. They’re usually not effected too much with a salt content that’s under 1.5% (.015), but will start to yellow up if the salt content is elevated above that. Salt levels of 3% (.03) and above, (which is the minimum salt level recommended when treating for parasites or when the ponds ammonia and nitrite levels spike during the Spring startup of your biofilter systems (helps the fish tolerate higher level of ammonia and nitrites)). If you intend to keep a high content of salt in the pond, it’s best to remove all plants and place them in a separate tank with fresh water in it until you lower the salt levels again. Don ikeepkoi
