[Worldwide Koi Club] I Think I Need Advice
Hi Brenda-
I thought I replied to this post but I don’t see it. so forgive me if I post the same thing twice… Your problem is likely the dirty water … I usually clean 1/3-1/2 the water once a week. Also, I have 2 filters on everything. One reason is because I can clean one filter every other week, the other is in case something goes wrong with one, one is still running. Be careful not to overclean too - that’s as bad as not cleaning… If the water is too dirty, the ammonia too high and etc., the fish will get stressed and this makes it vulnerable to disease. I’ve had the bruising you’re refering to —starts off looking like a welt or redness and then starts turning into some kind of rot. Usually it turns into 2 problems, infection and parasite, and you have to remove the infected fish and treat it in isolation with 2 kinds of medications. I try to avoid the medications cuz some fish are allergic to the meds and it causes more harm than good. I also put salt in my water. The fish like the salt ( non-iodized of course) and it helps promote healing and avoids parasites. Doesn’t do much good for the pond vegetation of course, but I prefer healthy fish to plants…
I’ve learned my lesson and am careful to keep the water clean and salted. I haven’t had any illness or problems ths year - touch wood ![]()
