[Worldwide Koi Club] DO NOT PUT GOLDFISH OR KOI INTO THE LAKE
Your right that koi and goldfish (for koi, it’s much more true) should not be kept in small aquariums or bowl for an indefinite time. I wasn’t implying they should be. They, as any fish that grow to a large size, will outgrow their aquarium or bowl environment, … at which time they should be introduced into a much larger environment to continue their development. When the koi and goldfish in my grand children’s 75 gal aquarium grow large enough, the koi are transferred into their outdoor pond, the goldfish are either given away or sold. New fish will then be placed into their aquarium.
Just as fish can outgrow the aquarium and bowl environment, … they can also outgrow the pond environment they are introduced into. When that happens, you’ll need to reduce the number of fish in the pond, or they’ll be in a no better situation than the smaller fish being raised in the aquarium.
Koi DON”T have to be in natural ponds to keep form suffering. There are an awful lot of natural ponds that a koi could never live in without an awful lot of human intervention. I know of one heck of a lot of koi (and goldfish) that seem to pretty darned happy with the environment and the care being given them while living in a man-made pond and environment. In fact, I’d bet there are many time more koi and goldfish living happily in their man-made (artificial) environments than there are or ever will be in natural ponds.
I guess we can each have our own opinions on how our fish should be cared for. Whether you raise them in an aquarium, a man-made pond, or a natural pond, … IF the water parameters and other environmental conditions are kept good, the fish will thrive and live well. IF, and when, water parameters or other environmental conditions are not monitored and maintained correctly, the fish will not do well.
Best regards, Don
