[Worldwide Koi Club] Ammonia problem
Trickle towers are one of the most efficient methods of biofiltration/degassing there is. They are actually much more efficient biofilters than the ones that have the bio media continually submersed in water. Trickle towers are not the most beautiful things to behold, but they ARE highly efficient for biofiltration and even degassing the nitrates out of the water (which most biofilters with fully submersed media don’t do). A Trickle Tower need not be anything more than a five gallon bucket with holes drilled into the sides and bottom (even plastic milk crates will work great), …. filled with a good bio media, …. hung above the pond, a waterfall, a filter tank, etc, …. with water being dispersed over the top of the media in the bucket.
The aerobic bacteria needed for biofiltration require oxygen to live. In a normal biofilter that has the bio media continuously submersed in water, the bacteria get their oxygen from the water they’re submersed in. In water, there is a limited supply of oxygen (obviously), so the aerobic bacteria are somewhat limited in their ability to process toxins in the water. With the same media in a Trickle Tower, the aerobic bacteria are provided with higher concentrations of oxygen from the combination of air and water they are exposed to. Because of the higher concentration of oxygen in their environment, they can process higher amounts of toxins faster. At the same time, the very high amount of aeration provided by the water trickling through the media, releases nitrate from the water. Don ikeepkoi
