[Worldwide Koi Club] Ammonia problem
The japanese matting is used for both mechanical and biological filter. I have one section of the filter system of approximately 50 gal. with about 1.5 cubic foot of matting used for mechanical filtering. Then the cleaning water flows up through basket filled with lava rocks and then to the second section of the filter system filled with more japanese mattings and and lava rocks. Finally that water is pumped to a 55 gal barrel filled up about 5-6 cubic foot of mattings with more lava rocks, and flows out to a 25w UV light system. I hope this help. Darren
