Water change = dying fish
Hi guys, I’m fairly new and this is my first post, but I’ve been lurking for a few weeks. I have some goldfish, black tetras, zebras and a some white zebra-sized fish whose name I don’t know.
Last weekend I did a 25% water change using tap water and de-chlorinating solution. Soon after, my fish started dying. They’ve been hanging around at the top of the tank and aren’t swimming as much. The goldfish were losing their colour, and most fishes fins were decaying, they looked like their find were turning into spider webs.
I lost a few more that night (including my girlfriend’s favourite goldfish!) so I went to pet shop for advice and explained everything that had happened - he said another lady came in just the day before with the exact same story and concluded that there must be something in the tap water. He gave me some general purpose fish medicine that’s designed for bacterial and fungal diseases, and even though most of the tetras have since died, the goldfish are getting healthier. The medicine turned my tank green though! (guessing that’ll dissapear with enough water changes)
So my question is - if I use bottled water for my next water change, do I still need to use the de-chlorinating solution? What about with distilled water (the local brewery has a tap for public access and a small fee, but I need a bottle so will buy the bottled water the first time).
Thanks, Daniel
