Water change = dying fish
I was thinking about your water, and sometimes here where I live, we get bacteria and algae blooms in our water source (we are at the very end of the line and use almost strictly imported water was Colorado and such). Perhaps your water source was/is slightly contaminated. It is fairly common here at least, and then we notice the water has a more chlorine smell after we notice a ‘fishy algae’ smell, in the water authorities attemps to remedy the situation. While it is generally unharmful to humans, a tank is more at risk. Perhaps you are correct, though I would’nt give up on the tap completely. After some time it will likely clear up.
