substrate and Co2 ? for planted tank

I used Eco-Complete substrate for my current planted tank because it was reccomended to me. My plants do o.k. but I am not sure if I need to supplement them with a fertilizer. Also, I plan to upgrade from my 44 gal to a 55 gal and don’t know if that will be a good enough substrate to use again. Also, do I need to add a C02 system? Here’s another thing I would like to address. I recently had out of control algae. I did a 3 day blackout out of sheer desperation. when I revealed my tank it was crystal clear. No algae on the glass and my plants had grown. There are clearly some on this list who have a wonderful grasp of all these variables that influence these biospheres. I have not come to full understanding yet. Can you help my understand how my plants grew with no light? Was it more CO2?
