striped raphael catfish (talking catfish)

Hmmmmm…. I think I see where the problem may lie after doing a little more research.
Apparently, Platydoras costatus is also called by the common name of Striped Raphael Catfish, as is Platydoras armatulus. This is what is WRONG with common names on many species of fish… especially catfish and cichlids.
In doing a search on […]

HR 669 - Federal Legislation To Ban All Exotics

Andrew,
Thanks for your informative post.
Is this NAIA? http://www.naiaonline.org/ and their blog http://blog.naiaonline.org/
There was also the NAIA Trust which was also about pets. http://www.naiatrust.org/
Is this PIJAC? http://www.pijac.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=1 and their alert about HR 669 http://www.pijac.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=175
There were several NAIA’s in a Google search and the above two are the only ones that looked right but I […]

[AquaticLife] Earthquake preparedness and the aquarium

I happen to an inspector for public school construction in California.
I can tell you since the Long Beach earthquake in 1932 no one has ever been hurt in a school due to seismic occurrences. There is a reason for that California undisputedly has the strongest buildings in the US/World due to science & engineering. […]

[AquaticLife] Earthquake preparedness and the aquarium

If the house falls down, I won’t be much concerned with the aquarium. I do, however, have a lot of confidence in the science and engineering pertaining to earthquakes. [AquaticLife] A Quite Mail Day?

Both of the pieces are new, the one on the left is true drift wood that I soaked for about a month in a tub to get it to sink, then sanitized it again in the dishwasher for good measure. The root looking one is the dead wood piece. I had it […]

[AquaticLife] Earthquake preparedness and the aquarium

Gotta look out for them earthquake engineers. Except for basic common sense, like sturdiness and flexibility, I wouldn’t trust them farther than I can throw them.
You do have to expect that if hte house falls down, it’s good bye aquarium.

[AquaticLife] A Quite Mail Day?

Just uploaded a picture of my 55 gallon with the piece of dead wood and a piece of drift wood both in it and some rocks. No fish in the tank yet, waiting to see if the dead wood piece tries to float away So far so good. When approved, […]

[AquaticLife] A Quite Mail Day?

Hi Amber,   At least that much BUT STILL.   I would put the piece in a tank with the fish you least care about for a few weeks. I don’t mean to sound cold blooded here but better there than in the tank with your absolute favorites and have disaster.  I know, it happened […]

[AquaticLife] A Quite Mail Day?

I had a piece of driftwood floating in my 125 gallon tank for a couple of months, it never sank as it wasn’t fully submerged but it also never caused any issues with the water quality that I could see. Unless it causes constipation in tetras On a side note, […]
