IN response to Algae verses plants

It seems evident in what you are trying to say, but plant ARE NOT algae — although, of course, algae ARE plants. As for the subject of whether the higher aquatic plants will outcompete the algae, and the nutrients both need as you’ve outlined, the latter is a given in that in the aquarium […]

IN response to Algae verses plants

In real ecosystems with plants of different species all the nutrients that are found in live plants get recycled when they die and are available to the other living things again: the sugars and cellulose are all broken down into monomers. As far as Algae outcompeting plants for nutriets and Plants growing […]

any saltwater people here

I have a 40 gallon tank with just a couple of fish and a bunch of live rock. I rarely do any maintenance, so I get a lot of aiptasia (which I eventually get around to getting rid of), but I have enough coralline algae growth that I have to keep scraping […]

Ammonia spike — water changes making it worse?

Hi Lenny,
Thanks for replying…I did a battery of tests and all other chem levels are normal…no high nitrites, etc..just ammonia. I did have two snails that died in the last 4 weeks, however. Both mysteriously disappeared and I was left with an empty floating shell. I thought, as you mention, that there would be […]

about tanks in general

You can but, its a lot more work involved. First you have to remove all traces of salt and all the salt deposits, which are not only harmful to the fish but, its ugly to look at. But, saltwater has other elements that have to be removed, like strontium and iodine to name a couple. […]
