Tom Barr’s method

Okay Lenny I will set the timer to 7 or 8 hours then and see how that goes. The window faces the tank so the room is lighted from outside so they get a good dawn/dusk environment already, and I have a night light over the tank (with a blue led lighting). […]

[AquaticLife] Walstad method, Was:Tom Barr’s method

The lake might freeze over, but I’m really not sure to be honest. Some of our lakes freeze over through the winter though.

[AquaticLife] Walstad method, Was:Tom Barr’s method

Okay I will cut the lighting down a bit, how far do you think? Is 8 hours still too much? I keep the front and side panel’s fairly well scraped off each week too. I don’t have a phosphate test kit, and doubt that my LFS has one, but will check later […]

[AquaticLife] Tom Barr’s method

Oops forgot to say how long the lights are on. I’ve been keeping them on for 12 hours but I can lower that if need be.

[AquaticLife] Tom Barr’s method

[AquaticLife] Tom Barr’s method

Actually, Amber, you should go back and re-read the http://thegab.org/Articles/WalstadTank.html. In reading what you are saying (and I didn’t realize your algae had become such a problem) some of what you may be doing is contradictory to the Walstad method and could be contributing to the algae.
Remember that a planted tank needs a balance […]

Cherry Shrimp would be cheaper and easier but the crabs are definitely something different.

[AquaticLife] Earthquake preparedness and the aquarium

That’s why I live in N’Awlins.. when it floods, the fish go free. LOL
But seriously, I haven’t seen much written on this topic… but I bet it’s been discussed on BadMan’s or TheKrib’s sites. I just did a quick Google and here’s a few archived discussions from sites that I recognize as usually reliable […]

[AquaticLife] Changing filter media in an established tank

If the tank is well established and the bio load not too high, then the interior substrate, décor and glass should have enough bacteria to regrow the population on the new media. Also the interior surfaces of the filter itself have colonies.
