Saturday night quiz thingee
Ask folks who try to wash their clothes in hard water - like your wife, maybe. That is why Culligan and other water softener companies are in business. Soap won’t foam and do its thing in hard water.
Look up water softeners and real their spiel - they all probably talk about why you need to soften the water if its too hard….
Soft water will hold dirt in suspension - like soap does. So a soft water pond will hold junk in suspension whereas a hard water pond will drop it like a rock onto the bottom = cleaner water. If you have a very soft water pond, and you put an underwater light in it and aim it sideways, then bring the hardness up PROPERLY, the light will show that the water is much cleaner.
