Re:air pumps
Air pumps are necessary for oxyginating the water and keeping it moving - filters alone cannot keep the water moving. They also help regulate the water temperature better because they allow for a more even mixture of water.
I find that my goldfish seem happier and are more playful when I have two or more air stones in my tank (right now I have a rather large bubble wand and a circular air stone as well as two filters in the tank and the fish are very active during the day)
