Ray! - Acriflavin
C. I. Basic Green 4 is a synonym for Malachite Green Hydrochloride which is a synonym for Victoria Green which is a synonym for Aniline Green, etc., etc.. They are all the same thing with different Trade Names, according to registered MSDS sheets… as long as the CAS number is the same… so when a website accurately says something has Victoria Green in it, it’s the same as saying it has C. I. Basic Green 4. API likely changed the name of their ingredients to C. I. Basic Green 4, to fool people into not realizing it was just Malachite Green aka Victoria Green that they were using.
TheGAB’s list of OTC fish meds http://thegab.org/Articles/FishMedications.html is very comprehensive and was thoroughly researched two years ago when it was being developed, although they may use different synonyms than you might prefer and/or possibly companies change the names in their ingredients from time to time.
You say po-ta-to, they say po-tat-o… it’s still a future french fry to me.. ![]()

And then there’s always Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachite_green (Malachite green, also called aniline green, basic green 4, diamond green B, or victoria green B, IUPAC name:4-[(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-phenyl-methyl]-N,N-dimethyl-aniline is a toxic chemical primarily used as a dye. When diluted, it can be used as a topical antiseptic or to treat parasites, fungal infections, and bacterial infections in fish and fish eggs. It is also used as a bacteriological stain.)
According to API’s website and the MSDS on their site http://cms.marsfishcare.com/files/msds/fungus_cure_liq_030308.pdf (see Section 3), Fungus Cure Liquid contains a 0.4% solution of Acriflavin CAS 8048-52-0… they do not list the other 99.6% so it’s probably a water solution… but it’s much different than the other “Fungus Cure Powder” product from API.
Section 2 or 3, in most MSDS, will give the ingredients and percentages so you don’t have to read the entire thing.. unless you like reading all that other good stuff.
