Question about pump for 4,000 gal pond
As far as brands etc there you create a lot of debate on which is best. Everyone has there vavorates. Differences being ability to handle solids, energy effeciency, and life span. I personaly have used danner mag drives for years and have not had one break down on me yet. Plus if need be repair parts are easy to get.
Now on sizing. A lot here will also depend upon your design water falls streams, and yur filter design. The manufacturers advertise a mininim of one water turn per two hours which would give you a minimum of 2,000gph after calculating your head and pressure loss. I consider a minimium of 1 turn per hour being much more better and realy closer to the minimium. For ideal situations a rating of 2 turns per hour is the optimium. Any higher flow than that will not give you much if any return for your investment.
With a 4,000 gallon pond I would go with a 5,000 gph Mag Drive pump as the best comprimise between cost and effeciency. If you runn the pump from a pre filter skimmer to a secondary filter and into a water fall or stream you will have a nice strong flow about 16″ wide or a slow stream of water about 50″ long. this can be tuned depending upon personal taste.
