Pond worms photos

I agree that these “worms” must be black fly larvae. However, the black fly season here in New England is usually late May and Early June. When they emerge, they are extremely annoying and do bite. They are around for 4 weeks or so and then totally disappear. I don’t know the life cycle of the little buggers, but, if the pond worms are their larvae, I’d expect to see waves of black flies showing up, but that has not happened. When I opened my skimmer a day or so ago, a cloud of flies came out, but they were not the biting black flies that I’m familiar with. So I guess the jury is still out. In any case, these worms seem harmless to the fish. I find the fish doing a lot of munching on the pond liner. I expect they are dining on the worms that were unfortunate enough to float off the waterfalls before attaching themselves somewhere.
