OT for Ray—–Yo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\\Steve//—help here please!
I think you better make comments here buddy! Ray, I can tell you this much as simply as I possibility can. It may be possible to install your current OS onto a new machine BUT—-it is not to likely. The Reason behind this is simple. Years ago when you bought a computer it came with a disk or OS disk with your operating system on it. This disk had an OEM (original equipment manufacture) number; you loaded the disk plugged in that number and you were off. Today most consumer computers come with what they call a Recovery Disk. Almost the same thing but not quite. They work off of the hard drive by a partition that you cannot see or have access to. This process is called “Ghosting” and it allows for simple and quick loading or re-loading of the OS at any time… The idea here was that with so many computers being sold, the manufactures do not have to buy individual OEM or OS (operating system) disk from Microsoft, they simply buy the rights or licensing to use the operating system for each machine they sell. Anyway, with this said, it is sometimes impossible to load any other system on top of or instead of the current operating system like Dell or HP. This Gateway I have here is like that. It will load a new or different system but without drivers for the sound card, keyboard and a few other particulars. Now I could force this issue by pre-loading my own drivers but this would be very difficult for you to do. You made mention of a Gateway. Please! Unless someone gives you one free, don’t buy it! I have this thing I have now from HSN (Home Shopping Network on TV) and I can tell you its insides are nothing but generic junk! My DVD/CD writer died right after the warranty was off. The RAM chips cost a bundle and are never on sale because they are a peculiar size, junk. The best machines to buy today for my money are either Dell first (because they will install the Windows XP system with service pack 3, at your request) and second Hewlett Packard. These machines have always worked well for me and I have worked on their insides and found them to be quite serviceable. I believe \Steve// will agree with me here. There’s a lot more to be considered here but we are trying to make your life easier, not give you “fits”. Also, remember our phone conversation about this issue and some of your comments? There is another alternative action you may take. If the person that you go to for repairs on your machine, also build’s computers then THEY can install a new OS for you or just as easily copy over everything you have right now onto a new systems hard-drive. I hope I have helped and not confused you? I’m sure \Steve// will be able to offer more as he is in the field and deals with these problems daily. Bill
