OT for Ray
I hear Mardel’s MaraWin will cure Winrot… maybe a 30 minute dip in a 0.3% salt solution would work too… at least at making sure you have to get a new computer. ![]()
I never heard of Winrot before either but I’ve never tried keeping a machine around that long either. I usually upgrade every few years.
This article says that Vista is the cure for Winrot! http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050808-5181.html I’ve never had to reinstall XP Home or Pro although I know it was common for it to be done on earlier versions of Windows. From reading the article, it looks like my regimen of defragging, check disk, registry cleaning and keeping my computers clean of malware does wonders… although I do find that I need to reboot them at least once a week or they’ll start to get sluggish… kind of like a power nap for the rest of us.
I do still have my first strictly business computer in storage… a hyperfast 80-286 processor with, I think 8MB of processing speed with a Turbo button increasing it to 12MB and a HUGE 10MB hard drive.. man that thing could do anything.
Cost me around $3,000.00 at Office Depot. Times have sure changed. I wish I would have saved every computer I’ve ever had for a mini-museum one day but between floods and hurricanes, it’s hard to keep stuff in storage for too long down here… but so far that 80-286 keeps surviving.
I always say, hurricanes (and floods) are God’s way of saying we have too much junk… although lots of good stuff gets ruined too.
