OT for Ray
Hey Ray, my husband is a bit of a computer tech (he fixes my computers when I break them, LOL). You might find that when you do get a new computer that windows xp won’t be too bad of an upgrade for your operating system. I was a long time windows xp professional user and just recently upgraded to windows vista 64 bit, which as I think Steve pointed out, has a lot of issues with older programs, and a lot of games (yes I’m a gamer, LOL). Windows xp is not too much different than the older versions of windows and you shouldn’t have too many issues getting used to it, and it’s a decently solid version of windows from what I have experienced. A lot of people who don’t use older programs and a lot of games find that vista is very user friendly for finding programs and just getting around in general, I must admit that I found all the new stuff they added very interesting and some of it is fun to play with (such as the new windows side bar). But basically it all comes down to what you’re going to buy, unless you get a higher end computer with 3-4 gigs of ram I would stick with windows xp as windows vista needs a lot of ram to operate properly, where-as xp is not as memory hoggy
My husband says if you go with windows 98 instead of a newer version of windows it’s going to be hard buying stuff (new programs, keyboards, mouse and such) that will run on it as most people don’t make drivers for older windows systems anymore. So I would not suggest sticking with windows 98 unless you’re going to keep your keyboard/mouse and all that as well as the drivers, windows xp and vista both auto search for drivers but don’t always locate older ones very easily, and if they aren’t still up to download somewhere you’re basically SOL
Dell sells computers with both windows xp and vista, so I’m sure you could find something decent, I recommend dell only because I’ve never had a gateway (but I’ve heard some bad rumors). Dell is hard to deal with if your computer breaks after the warranty, so I recommend getting a longer warranty, mine broke right after my warranty expired, go figure, LOL. This last computer I got was pieced together, and I’m much happier with it, even if there’s no warranty, besides I live with a computer wiz that can fix it for me, LOL
Shhh.
