OT for Ray
Ray,
You could be suffering from any, or a combination, of a number of problems. There is a problem known as Winrot in which the OS degrades over a period of time. Many factors contribute to this. It is much worse with 98 than with XP and Vista.
Your machine may be infected with malware, which pretty much means software you did not knowingly install.
Various pieces of hardware could be failing. The most common would be fans and hard drives.
Just last week I looked at a machine. From just one area where malware commonly resides, I removed 28 instances of different malware. At this point I determined that it would be more cost efficient and effective to re-install the OS. I ran my normal CHKDSK on the drive and it found and corrected a number of problems. I ran it twice more, since I look for a clean run of it before proceeding. The second and third runs still came up with errors. At this point I informed the client and replaced the hard drive, since it would become unusable in a relatively short period. This machine was only about 2.5 years old.
Since your machine is likely 8+ years old, you are likely more than ready for a replacement. Look for one that has XP installed on it. Continuing to use 98 would be doing a disservice to yourself. If you wish, contact me off list, and I will work up a couple of configurations for you to choose from, along with the pricing.
