OT for Ray
Oh, you mean those machines that are not affected by malware, yet more of them are infected each day?
We have a business critical application that will not run under Vista. There are many older peripherals that will not run under Vista, often because the manufacturers have not written drivers for them. And if you go to 64-bit Vista, you’ll have even more fun with peripherals.
Keep in mind that my business deals mostly with businesses, small businesses. For many of them, this means that the only upgrade path is to get a new machine to even run Vista. They then need to replace peripherals that will not work with Vista. They may then need to replace apps that no longer work properly–even Office 2003 can have problems running under Vista, depending on what is used. Such an upgrade path can mean the difference between profit and loss for a small business. Also, FWIW, there are very few successful upgrades done in place from XP versions to Vista versions. One really needs to do a bare metal install. Prior to doing so, one needs to ensure that the proper drivers are available for Vista, which is often not the case for even machines 2 years old. In such cases, an upgrade will essentially fail, since one may not be able to properly communicate with the outside world if the drivers are not available.
I have heard the argument that there were driver issues with XP at the beginning, and there were. However, over a relatively short period of time, these issues were resolved (though if you were affected, any period of time is not short). That has not been the case with Vista.
What we have no, pretty much, is two OS’s, one for the consumer user, and the other for business users. Yes, some companies run Vista machine, but not many, and MS is not likely to get much deeper penetration into the business market with Vista than it has now, according to surveys. This had led MS to, yet again, extend the availability of XP Pro. So, yes, Virginia, there are still new machines available with XP loaded. You just will not find them at retail.
