I have bred goldies before (circa 1986). Here’s what I did; Adults laid eggs in artificial plant and I had set up a 30 gal 3/4 of the way full and had no clue what I was going to put in. It was close enough to a window and the water turned green. So I decided to move the spawn in there. (the water was from the goldfish tank and there was a sponge filter in place). Three days later I had hundreds of what looked like pieces of string with eyes hanging from the sides of the glass. I went for the easy homemade deal; boil a chicken egg, all you want is the yolk, take a pinch of said yolk and put in a one ounce container with tank water. Shake it good and feed them that at three days old (you want them free swimming, as long as they dont swim they still have embrionic egg yolk) for the fist week, twice a day. After the first week of feeding they can graduate to powdered fish food. A huge number of the fry will be deformed, you have to cull constantly. You have to do A LOT of PWC. We are talking hundreds if not over a thousand fry. Using an air hose I would vacuum the bare bottom after feeding to remove uneaten food + poop. DO NOT use a regular sized hose to do your partial because the fry will get sucked. You are enslaved to using the air hose until they get some size and get some sense in getting away from the hose. Let me tell you it took a lot of time and dedication. Once they reach 1/4 of an inch you NEED to find homes, separate further, fill every container you can find and if need be, take over the garage and put the largest wading pool you can find in there for them. If you are lucky very few will make it…otherwise your friends and family will decides you went off the deep end and need to be sent to the asilum. I ended up with more than 100 fry, but got lucky and many people wanted a baby goldie because they all knew how big mine were. I’m old school and make my own food whenever I can. Trust me, you dont need to buy fry food for goldfish babies. Suspended egg yolk will do. After that grind up any high quality goldfish pellets until they get some size to them. Then get a gel recipe from the many that were posted and go from there. Enid **************New year…new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines.
