Noisy filter and Algae
BE CAREFUL - the input plumbing is under pressure from the pump and can handle lots more water than a gravity feed overflow pipe can. You usually need double the piping for the discharge. If you reduce it you may wind up overflowing - especially if a leaf or debris wanders into the picture.
And for the gentleman with the fuzzzzzy algae: there are basically three types of algae. Single cell = pea soup = converts the fish waste into plants = good - but YOU don’t like green water. DO NOT KILL IT WITH CHEMICALS! Long Stringy Algae = usually in streambeds = wonderful at chemically cleaning the fish waste and its nutrients from the water. Clean it up by turning off the pump so the stream is not running and just use your hand to pickup the majority of it. You wil l be removing LOTS of nutrients (fertilizer) that would otherwise feed pea soup. And type 3 = fuzzzzzzy algae = good stuff = helps clean the water and gives the fish a treat to eat.
Never kill algae with chemicals = just makes the problem worse.
Reduce the algae by 1)reducing the amount of fertilizer in the water = cut back on the amount of food and remove the crap on the bottom more often (before it rots.) 2)increase the amount of fertilizer consumed by the plants = add fast growing plants either to the pond or to the pond system = you can always add a garden anywhere that is higher than the pond and run water from the pond into it and have it gravity feed back to the pond thru plumbing or a stream.
