HI JAKI,
If your pond is 40gallons instead of 400 gallons, it is probably a glass or fiberglass aquarium & not a pond. Nevertheless, whether it is an aquarium or a pond, it is way too small for 13 kois and it is a miracle that they still seem healthy. The kois you bought from BiorR or KioVille are probably the 3-4″ kois.
*The GOODNES* is, if given the right amount of food and space, they will grow big.
*The BAD NEWS* is, your small pond is like a time bomb. Your 13 kois will grow big (sooner than you think), your space will be too crowded for them and your Fluval will not be able to handle the poohs that they excrete. If the problem is not resolved, water quality will deteriorate, your kois will be subject to increased stress which will result to decreased resistance. Under this condition, they will be vulnerable to attack by bacteria which will result to different kinds of diseases or even fatalities.
*OPTION #1 *- if your garden is too small for a pond, the best you can do is buy a 75 gallons aquarium, less than P2,000 at BioR. They make good Q aquariums because they are exporting them.
Select 4 of the kois you like most and give away the remaining 7 to friends who wants to adopt them.
*OPTION #2 *- If you do not have the heart to give away your 13 lovable kois, then:
a) Have a 250 gallons aquarium made (P6,000 & up) by auto-glass makers in Banawe St., Q.C. b) Replace your Tiny FLUVAL filter with A BIO-STEP Filter Box. c) Use a 500 gallons per hour pump. d) Add a Powerhead to agitate the water and increase its circulation e) Put powerful aerator (Air Pump) to maximize oxygen in the pond.
*OPTION #3(BEST OPTION)* - If you and your husband really LOVE KOIS, but have really limited space, have a small pond made with a good system using Portable FIlter Boxes.
The reason why I suggest that you have a pond made (if possible) is because you can appreciate the beauty of KOIS only when viewed from the TOP. Kois look like colored Bangus from the side.
HOPE THIS HELPS!
