My fist post. Question on Giant Gourami

My first question here is — what do you mean by “for a little while”? And, what are you planning to do with this Giant Gourami after this “little while”? Yes, its entirely possible for a 4 to 5 inch Giant Gourami to live with a 5 inch Oscar and a 4 inch Jack Dempsey, epecially when considering these two latter fish have not yet reached maturity yet, and with that in mind, have not yet reached their full potential for any aggressiveness they may yet develop.
Still, and noting you’re planning on a larger tank, even when full grown, all three of these fish may (note: the word is “may,” as in not certain) still get along alright. It’s noted that you and your husband are aware that this Gourami can reach at least 12″ in length. You may well be aware too, that Oscars can get to at least 12″ and often up to 15″ - 16″ when maintained in proper housing. I don’t know if you’re aware that Jack Dempsey’s will get to at least 11″. I would like to point out that this 12″ Giant Gourami you’ve seen in your LFS is only HALF-GROWN. The Giant Gourami (Osphronemus goramy) gets to 24″ in nature, and not much less than that in captivity. For this reason, you may want to think twice about this 4″ - 5″ acquisition, unless your plans for “a bigger tank soon” include something MUCH larger. Ray
