Looking Koi(Steuben Co NY)
First question for Karen is how large are your 15 year old fish?
This brings me back to when I had my store front and usualy had 300 or more Koi for sale every spring and early summer. I would bring these fish in from Lapan through an importer and usually bring in three specific varieties as they sold the best. Sanke, Showa, and Hikari. I also learned that bringing in fish between 3″ and 10″ were the best since these were then salable at a price where my customers could afford. Shipping in anything larger than 10″ meant I would have over $125 invested in the fish before it hiot my holding ponds.
However every fall I would have a series of individuals that would come to me. Please take my fish or fishes because they are to large and I’m afraid they will not last the winter in my small 18″ to 30″ deep pond. In wisconsin the winter han hit streaks of 2 to 4 weeks where the temperatiure does not get get above zero. While it was rare to get a colorful Koi from these people many of them were 24″ or larger.
