I usually change my bulbs every 1-2 years, or at least I’d like to, I’m not always that good ![]()
The type of bulb depends on what your needs are. Planted and reef tanks have a specific requirement and unless you know what to buy, it’s easier yet more expensive to buy the LFS bulbs. If on the other hand you grow nothing that requires special lighting, all you really care about is CRI which is a number that indicates how accurately colors will be reproduced under such a bulb. A CRI of around 90 or above is very good for example. If you google most any bulb you should be able to obtain the rated CRI value, not all state it on the product packaging. Some hardware stores have little booklets with this info on the bulbs they carry…
Other than that, you can use any bulb as long as it looks good to you ![]()
