KOI HERPES VIRUS Confirmed in Orlando Florida Case May 2008

“Through the IPPCA’s Pond Hobbyists’ Hotline (770) 592-9790, a pond hobbyist from central Florida called in with a fish health issue. Hobbyist bought fish from multiple dealers in first part of March. No QT or parasite treatment was done to fish prior to insertion into existing pond population.
Upon initiating and following the IPPCA established self-administered Hobbyist parasite treatment protocols for a “fish are dying as we speak” situation, the fish did not respond in 12,24 and 48 hours as they should have.
Upon further investigation, we felt we were probaly dealing with a virus, as visible ulcerations were not occuring at that time, and resident goldfish were showing no symptoms. We recommended on day two of this case that multiple dead fish be shipped to UGA for testing. Results of the test were furnished to us through proper protocols at 5:40 pm yesterday, 5-28-08. Test was positive for KHV.
Anyone who has purchased fish in the CENTRAL FLORIDA AREA since March 1st of this year (2008) and have experienced more than a 50% death loss, please contact the IPPCA Pond Hobbyists Hotline at (770) 592-9790, 9-6 EST 7 days a week.More details to follow.”
