Is RO water absolutelty necessary for Discus?)
Nim, you have no idea how long I hesitated myself before trying it…
Play with it in a bucket of saltwater, it must be superglue-gel however. Most stores sell tiny tubes that don’t last long and tend to harden on their own once opened. I either purchase “re-named” large tubes of it from the LFS, or from hobby stores. As soon as it hits the water it becomes opaque and starts to set from the surface in, so you must be quick to attach it and you must also hold it very still and firm against the rock for 20-30 seconds. At times I need to place a little glue on the rock as well as the frag, but I find that too much superglue slows down the hardening process too much, a little on the frag itself is all that’s needed.
The other benefit of superglue-gel is that it catherizes the “wound” where the frag was cut. It’s a common practice when fragging to place a little superglue on the fresh cut to help seal the wound and avoid any problems related to that. Personally I haven’t had bad luck with cutting frags, they all seem to recover on their own, however recently one of the colonies was experiencing slow tissue necrosis so I promptly cut the effected areas and sealed all the cuts with superglue-gel.
Epoxy is great too. While I haven’t experimented with all kinds, I use the tube of underwater epoxy (feels like playdough) that is sold at LFS. You just cut a piece off, mix it with your fingers for a minute and apply it within the next minute. It will set in less than 3 minutes so you need to work with a little at a time. The LFS stuff is blueish in color so tends to hide a little better until coraline hides it for good. I use it mostly for securing rock and large colonies, some times just to reinforce a colony… I find superglue- gel better for attaching frags though. Epoxy can get hot while curing so you want to be careful not to burn the frag, this is the usual warning I hear, but I haven’t had problems the few times I did use it on SPS frags.
Slip on a diaper and give it a shot! ![]()
