High pH - 8!
Now keep in mind if you do go with cichlids eventually, i believe you said you had a 20 gallon tank, I would only suggest maybe 3-4 and of course you would only be able to get smaller, lesser aggressive ones maybe something like what i have that are available in most LFS are the acei and yellow labs, others that i have found rather easy are red zebras. There are some others that are blue with black strips that i know are fairly common not sure of their name though, but think they are related to yellow labs.
But really cichlids are FUN to watch they are very active fish, and some are very colorful too.
Also like i said Just go to the grocery store and buy a few gallons of distilled water. Maybe do a 50/50 mix with your tap water and distilled water. it would only cost you 5-10 a month if your distilled water is about the same price as it is where i live at.
