High pH - 8!
<<The one factor that worries us is that our tap water has a pH that is consistently around 8. Will this ultimately be the death of our fish? Any attempt to lower the pH with the stuff from the local pet store (pH> Adjust) has been fruitless. I read the stuff is barely affective at any rate. Perhaps we need to investigate using peat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Angela - Canada>>
Hi Angela. Before you add anything more to the tank, please tell us what type of decorations you are using. Any corals, sea shells, tuffa rock, coral rock or coral gravel? If you are, these would increase the pH and alkalinity, which would make it difficult to bring the pH down. If you are using none of these, check the pH of your tap water, both directly out of the faucet and after letting it sit overnight in a glass jar. If the pH is high right from the tap, and remains so overnight, that is the cause of your problem. This can be corrected by several means: 1) dilute your tap water with RO or distilled water (expensive over time); 2) place the tap water in a or several 5 gallon buckets, and place a box filter containing plain sphagnum peat moss (no additives) in there. Let is filter the water for a day, then check the pH. Most likely it will have dropped significantly, and you can use that water to dilute your tap water. You’ll need to experiment to get the right mix to bring the pH to the level you want.
The their option, assuming no calcareous materials in the tank, is to do nothing. The pH will not bother your fish once they are acclimated to it. It’s more the sudden changes in environmental parameters like pH that cause problems rather than the parameter itself.
