Tim,
Actually, breeding for black in any fish seems to be detrimental to the health of the fish. The fish with a natural black coloration seem to do fine, but those bred to create a black strain can have all kinds of health issues, including, and most often, a propensity for cancer. I seem to recall reading, some time ago, that the problems are created by the mechanism that produces the black pigment. I’d need to do some research on that to confirm or deny my memory here.
