FOAM -AND PLANTS FOR A POND
So where is Lenny or Sue when I need them?
I’m back from cleaning out the Chambers of Death…
There are many ways to fumigate - I personally do not like any chemical with formaldahyde or formalin in a fish pond. HOWEVER, for plants only, they work very well. Buy any pond curative with formalin or formaldahyde as a major ingredient. Follow directions on the product. If you do not have a special plant fumigation chamber, you can make one within a fairly reasonable budget - it is called a garbage can. If it’s too yucky, line it with a fresh garbage bag.
Drain, rinse, drain and rinse before you add them to the pond.
The problem is that plants are a wonderful way for virtually all bad bugs and fungi and bacteria to travel and see the world - including the inside of your pond and fish.
Some of you are asking (I hope) “but what about KHV?”
I’m glad that you asked. KHV requires a koi host to survive more than one or two days. So, if you hold your plants in said garbage can - say in something called tap water after the fumigation period - for a couple or three days….. No KHV.
(Lenny would have told you to just soak them in Mississippi River water down there in N’Orlins for a couple of hours. Nothing will live in it! - Of course Sue would have told you to put them in Mississippi River water in Min’..niee..soo’..ta - that would kill anything via the quick freeze.)
By the way, a good rule of thumb for anacharis is one bunch per square foot of pond…. So, three bunches in a 200 sq ft pond doesn’t hack it….
And if you can get a nice big pot that you can pump water into and have it overflow back into the stream or pond - fill it with water celery… Great Plant and great filter.
