FOAM
TWO situations: with or without fish.
Without fish: who cares why, just get rid of it with a surfactant generically called anti-foam. Jungle and API make anti-foam products for fountains. Or you can go to your local supermarket and get the anti-foam sold with the rent-a-carpet-cleaner chemicals.
WITH FISH: DO NOT USE ANY OLD ANTI-FOAM!
Foam is caused by dissolved organics. Especially the end results of spawning activities. Plants, especially rapidly growing plants, will help reduce the dissolved organics in the pond water. And Jungle, etc., have products that are FISH SAFE to kill foam. I am typing this at home, for a change, and forget who all makes it - I believe API and Ecological Labs (Microbe-lift) also have products on our shelves specifically for fish ponds.
Floculants may also help remove junk from the water. Removing organics is much better than just using a surfactant anti-foam when there are fish.
And why does sour cream have an expiration date?
