Filtration
Dennis, Do you know if anyone sells 2″ thick coarse PolyFlo batting in your area? My biofilters are basically the same as Lorraine’s with the exception that my choice of media is the 2″ PolyFlo instead of Scubbies. PolyFlo usually comes in very large 56″ wide rolls, and it’s usually sold by the lineal foot. Around here, the 2″ thick stuff will cost between $9.50 to $12.50 per lineal foot. Several of the koi specialty places around here sell precut lengths that when rolled up, fit tightly into a plastic 55 gal drum. They will sell for between $65-$75.00 per roll. If you know anyone who has the ability to buy the media wholesale, you can save better than half that price.
I build my biofilters with oval shaped 110-150 gal ToughStuff livestock water tanks and 55 gal plastic barrels (70 gal barrels if I can find them). My biofilter system is made up with a 150 gal oval tank first that’s set up as a vortex settlement tank. I have twelve 8″ long brush filters set up across the waters exit from that first tank. The brushes collect virtually all of the particulates that aren’t settled to the bottom during the vortex stage. From the settlement tank, I split the water flow to slow it down before it enters the biofilters. The water from each line then goes through two 55 gal barrel biofilters. Each of the four 55 gal barrels contains two stacked 10″ rolls of PolyFlo in them. The water then drops through a small trickle tower (for added aeration), before going back into the pond via the water fall. If needed, I’ll add a 110 gal oval stock tank as the final stage of the filter system.
