do goldfish babies sluff their skin?

Thanks Bill, I have learned lots here over the last year. I purchased a new liquid kit this spring, it expires in 2011, and is by nutrafin… it wasn’t my first choice but was the only one I could find early in the year. I test my water once per week, if not more but usually thursdays. Just checked it and these were the results. GH 80 KH 90 PH 8.0 (it fluctuates slightly during the day this is the low end) nitrite .1 ammonia 0 water temp 74 Do you think that I should raise my KH slightly, I had thought as long as it was above 80 we were okay? These are pretty much my regular readings, although my pond KH and PH are a little higher. Thanks, Lori

You mentioned that you are testing the water - but not how and for what.A very interesting phenomena occurs in very low pH = the fish start to”slough their skin” - at least that is what it looks like.If you are using pH strips, go get an in-date liquid test kit. I likeAquarium Pharms’s - now known as Mars Fish Care. If you are using aliquid test kit - check the date. I would strongly suggest that youalso check your KH. If your pH is low, it could be a pH crash due tono KH. And the result will be exactly what you described - as yourfish die….Lenny - please add to this - I am not a fish expert, but I do havefirst hand experience with this in Lynn’s 175gal bowfront aquarium inher office. (Yeh, I was a bad daddy….. and I wasn’t testing the wayI should have - and I almost killed them all. It was close. Thereare currently 8 smallish (4″ - 9″) koi in the tank. They are MUCHhappier now.:-)Bill— In Ponds-Koi@yahoogroups.com, Lori Little wrote:>> > Thanks everyone for your replies. I did salt this morning. Theplants have found a new temporary home, although this was a temporaryhome… We have started digging the new pond which will be 2500g andso these 2 little koi were only to be in the tank for quarantine. Thepond we have now is just under 1000g and the 2 will be joined by astream. It’s all very exciting and not moving quite as quickly as Iwant it too! Comet babies were not something that I had bargainedfor, (had I known they were there they would have been gone before the2 koi were put in) but they will be finding themselves some new homesshortly. I have continued to test the water regularly and so far havenot had problems, and hopefully, this will be emptied within the nextfew weeks and everyone will be settled before winter is upon us.> > Does anyone have a bog garden? I plan on putting one in, it will beseperate from the ponds, but I’m not 100% sure on the initial set up.Would love your ideas.> Thanks again!> > Lori > > > > > > > __________________________________________________________>
