Dirt for planting pond plants

I learned something new over the weekend. Pond dirt is not some magical concoction of goodness that doesn’t cloud your water, so you pay twice as much for it- as you should- thing. It is just good, old fashion, clean dirt that arrives at the nursery. For regular potted plants, they add things like peat & perlite. This would not be good for the pond. So pond dirt, is just dirt - with nothing added. So why most places charge way more than regular potting soil is a mystery. My local nursery (Farmington Greenhouse for those of you in Minnesota) bagged it up and sold it to me for the same price as potting soil ($6.00). I also read that you can use top soil (not potting soil!) just read the bag to ensure nothing has been added. Be sure to add rocks, pebbles, pea gravel, whatever on top of the dirt so it stays put. I saw aquatic soil for as much as $20.00 for a small bag! Don’t forget the aquatic fertilizer tablet and that’s about all. I split & re-potted most of my plants so this year I have almost double from last year =) I also read that you can use the dirt right out of your own yard - as long as you know it has not been treated w/ chemicals.
