Next time just drop the filter media in the tank. It’s not the best thing but will be OK for a few hours.. especially if you have an airstone and put the filter media over/around the air stone so it gets water circulation. The other thing you can do is make sure your filter intake is sticking down far enough so that you can do a 25% PWC without the water ever getting below the intake so you can leave them running when doing a PWC. When new, filter systems usually come with intake tube extensions to make them go pretty deep into a tank…. at least past the 25% PWC level.
Hopefully the nitrite eating bacteria will kick in also. It seems like with such a low level of nitrites, the SafeStart should have kicked in 100% immediately. I hope Tetra didn’t mess up the reformulation of Bio-Spira into SafeStart.
