Asian biotope
I thank the members of this forum for their interest and concern for fish disappearing from their native habitat. Our Govt. bans live rock in the hobby but allows commercial trawling which, in my opinion is far more dangerous to the reefs. Initiatives are being taken for captive breeding Indian ornamental fish. Our laws hardly have any provision for protecting ornamental fish. (http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3642). Mike: I’ll compile a list of threatened species soon. Thanks
Joanna: You’re right. There are plenty of ornamental fish that multiply quickly and are not restricted to a particular habitat. With proper management, I agree that these can be caught for the hobby.
New species are being discovered in the Western Ghats regularly. Most live in and have adapted to the number of unique biotopes found in the W.Ghats. These are very vulnerable and can be exploited by unscrupulous dealers who get away with a little or no punishment. The old adage, “the killing stops when the buying does” is apt.
