[AquaticLife] Need help identifying fish?!
One thing you might want to do is also list the latin name along side of common name as common names are often used on many different fish. For example, your image for what you label a “Zebra Fish” is a black/white variant of the Clown Fish (like in Finding Nemo)(Amphiprion ocellaris). Zebra Fish is also a name given to the Zebra Danio which is a very common freshwater species, as well as to several other species.
You might want to use http://www.fishbase.org to verify the fish information you might find on other sites, after checking other sites, as FishBase is probably the most extensive and accurate database of saltwater (and freshwater) fish but doing a search for just - zebra fish - in FishBase, came up with three different species all together… not including yours or the Zebra Danio. Now, using the single word - zebrafish - it found two more species, including the Zebra Danio… but still nothing on your fish. Now you see why it’s good to use the latin name when trying to properly ID a fish… and you’ll impress your friends with your use of all them BIG words. LOL If you just want to use common names, then the one you have labeled as “Zebra Fish” should be changed to “Clown Fish - black/white variant”.
Here’s what FishBase says about your Clown Fish (black/white variant)… and if you click on the single image on the page, it will open a page of images but all of the images were of the natural orange/white species… http://fishbase.org/Summary/speciesSummary.php?ID=6509&genusname=Amphiprion& speciesname=ocellaris
Here’s DrsFosterSmith.com’s PetEducation.com website profile on the black/white variant. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=16+2145+2185&aid=2512
Each name that you’ve remembered on the fish should go through this type of vetting to make sure you’ve properly ID’ed them… if that is what you are hoping to accomplish. If you simply use a common name and a visitor to your site tries to find more info, they’ll likely be led on a wild goose chase if they are not good internet researchers.
I’ll look at a few others as I get more time today. I’m just starting to go through my email for the day.
