[AquaticLife] I have a question..
A good way to find out what fish are suggested companions for other fish are the Mongabay.com profiles. Go to http://www.mongabay.com/search.htm, then in the Advanced section, put a bullet in the Fish line and do a search on either the common name or latin name.
Here’s the Yellow Labid http://fish.mongabay.com/species/Labidochromis_caeruleus.html where you’ll see that the Synodontis family is a suggested companion (SC section) but not the Corydoras.
You can usually find a page with a variety of fish from the same family such as for your Mbuna’s http://fish.mongabay.com/mbuna.htm but you’ll see that Synodontis are the only catfish species listed in each of the individual profiles on this page.
Part of the reason is that Cory’s http://fish.mongabay.com/corydoradinae.htm do not prefer the usually much harder and higher pH water that Mbuna’s prefer and the Synodontis comes from the same lakes. There’s a repeating typo on this page where SB is put in twice instead of there being an SB section and an SC section. I’ve emailed Mongabay so they can correct this typo. They usually make corrections quickly.
Here’s an article discussing compatibility issues with Mbuna’s and goes over some of the algae eating catfish issues as well. http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/mbuna3.htm
