Start re-homing the fish he’s probably forgotten even buying. If he notices and asks, just say something like, “When you overstock, you’re bound to have a die off sooner or later.”
Better yet, re-home a whole tank and then borrow a large piranha from the LFS. When he notices, tell him, “I told told you they’d grow!”
No, seriously, I’d just start re-homing them and I’d tell him that’s what I’m doing and it’s his choice if he wants to keep stocking other peoples’ tanks.
