[AquaticLife] bio filter

Caroline,
If you are referring to a Biowheel filter, never throw them away. Your filter might be clogged or impeded somewhere. Have you tried removing the intake pipe and rinsing it out in the sink? Or the intake strainer? If those are clear the impeller may be clogging. You can remove the impeller and it’s housing and rinse it out in the sink. Please make sure you do not drop the impeller down the drain.
If the water is flowing fast and the wheel is not rolling or is slow you can take it and make sure the little bearings are still there and do not get lost. You can gently shake the bio wheel in the tank itself and place it back in the cradle it rests in.
