[AquaticLife] An experiment has started…

The 3 to 5 drops per gallon guideline to bring the ammonia up to 3-5ppm, seems to work in your case.. with the 5 drops per gallon being the max to bring it to 5ppm.. 4 drops per gallon would give you 4ppm. If the initial 6 drops in 12G brought it up to 0.5ppm, then 1 drop per gallon would bring it up to 1ppm. It’s best to start with 3 drops per gallon and then test it to make sure your dropper isn’t putting out larger drops than average… then bumping it up to the 4th drop per gallon and 5th drop per gallon until it gets to between 4-5ppm.
Now that you’ve explained your LFS guy’s attitude, I understand why you got nervous but he’s obviously still stuck in the past. Ask him how many goldfish can go in a goldfish bowl? LOL That’s my test for any fish place… how much water does a goldfish need? 10G or less, per fancy goldfish, gets a failing grade. Asking about how to fishless cycle and the nitrogen cycle in general are also good lil tests to see how experienced your fish store employee might be.
It’s still good to do the 90% PWC just to make sure that the liquid ammonia you were dosing didn’t have any kind of contamination. The Ace Brand is only supposed to be the plain ammonia solution but we’re talking retail products subject to cross contamination during the manufacturing process. These aren’t medical grade products that are produced in sterilized conditions. Of course, you would have only dosed the tank once or twice versus the amount that would normally be used during a full fishless cycle… but I’d still do the large PWC.
Using 1/2 of the Dr. Tim’s One And Only should be all you need for a 12G tank so you could refrigerate the rest and save if for your next tank as long as you set it up within the next few months. See http://www.DrTimsAquatics.com for more details on shelf life and refrigeration procedures.
