By chance did you mean freshwater tank?
When you say pump do you mean filter?
Many pumps or filters you can attach a pre filter sponge to. This can catch debris that may break the impellor or clog the pump. The sponge can also act as an additional biological filter.

Hi all,
I have a tank in which I’ve changed to a saltwater tank. It’s 29 gallon, and I have 2 plecos and 2 African Cichlids (Plan on getting more. Lately I’ve been very frustrated with my pump because it always seems to clog itself very quickly. My water is clear, but I’m wondering what pumps you guys use and like best when it comes to maintenance.
