anti-alge products

thank you! that is very helpful, and actually based on everyone’s advice and some additional reading yesturday i took all the carbon out of my filter last night. and i have begun adding liquid plant food to my tank, before i was just using the little fertilizer “pills” once a month. i still have the carbon just in case i need it in the future. thanks again. this list has made a newbie like me so much more confortable with keeping a tank. my plants are doing pretty well for the most part, but now i hope they really begin to folurish!! marcelo
Giancarlo Podio wrote: Actually no-one “needs” carbon, it is not an important part of filtration long-term. Carbon is used mostly to remove medications and elements that can stain the water, like tannic acids from driftwood. Besides using it to remove medications or other elements you have introduced in the tank, it has mostly an esthetic purpose than anything else. In a non-planted tank, there is no negative side to using carbon, therefore many use it at will or all the time. In a planted tank it can remove some elements that the plants require so that’s why it’s rarely used when live plants are present.
Hope that helps Giancarlo Podio, LMD
