Actually no-one “needs” carbon, it is not an important part of filtration long-term. Carbon is used mostly to remove medications and elements that can stain the water, like tannic acids from driftwood. Besides using it to remove medications or other elements you have introduced in the tank, it has mostly an esthetic purpose than anything else. In a non-planted tank, there is no negative side to using carbon, therefore many use it at will or all the time. In a planted tank it can remove some elements that the plants require so that’s why it’s rarely used when live plants are present.
