An experiment has started…

Couple of additional questions
1) you wrote you “removed the Eco-complete” can you explain that more. Was there still some in the tank? I reason I ask is that you are the second person in two days to mention eco-complete in a tank that had high ammonia even with One & Only.
I looked up what eco-complete is and here is what the makers say
“The CaribSea Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate also contains live Heterotrophic Bacteria to rapidly convert fish waste into natural food for your aquatic plants. The Caribsea Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate also creates a natural biological balance which makes cycling in a new aquarium faster and safer.”
This is interesting because do you realize that assuming there really is heterotrophic bacteria in the substrate what they do is convert organic matter into ammonia! I do not have any scientific data yet but it might be that use of this product just overwhelms the nitrifiers because the substrate/bacteria are producing too much ammonia. I do not know this for sure but it is a possibility.
2) You wrote that you used half a bottle - I assume you shook the bottle well and that the liquid poured out was a reddish-brown and not clear - yes?
In any case, a replacement has been sent and I am sorry for the hassle.
