An uncovered tank will lose an inch a week, or more, to evaporation. Of course, if you have coldwater fish, hopefully the room (ambient) temp is in the low 70’s so evaporation will not be as much of an issue. If the room temp is higher than the low 70’s, then leaving it uncovered might be better to allow the water to cool itself via evaporation.
There are steps that should be taken when doing PWC’s and topping off a tank that has a high evaporation rate.
